| As the music world farewells the king of pop Michael
Jackson, academia mourns the loss of a scholar of truly biblical
proportions. Martin Hengel was Professor of New Testament and Early
Judaism at Germany’s prestigious University of Tübingen from 1972 until
(as Professor Emeritus) his death last Thursday (July 2). The author of
dozens of important monographs and literally hundreds of technical
articles, Professor Hengel's influence will be long-lasting. John
Dickson had the enormous privilege of conducting what was perhaps
Hengel’s last full-scale television interview (for a 2008 historical
documentary). The uncut interview is made available here in his honour. |

| Thank you for sharing this interview; it punctuates many of Professor Hengel's primary concerns, which he argued so powerfully in his erudite way over the course of his amazingly prolific life. The setting of the interview also brings back fond memories of meeting with him in his home in 1987 and comparing notes on the Johannine tradition. His generosity was exemplary, and scholarship was first rate! | |
