Refugee Adviser Bruce Baird Calls for a More Compassionate Australia

Bruce Baird is a former Federal Liberal Politician in the Australian Parliament, and former trade commissioner in Germany and then New York. He held a number of senior ministerial positions in State Government, including being minister for Sydney’s successful bid for the 2000 Olympics.

In Federal politics he became well-known for controversially opposing his own party on their policies regarding the detention of refugee women and children.

He was recently appointed Chairman of the Refugee Resettlement Advisory Council by the Rudd Labor Government.

In this interview we talk to him about his years in politics and the role his faith plays in his life.

Of particular interest here is his experience with refugees and asylum seekers. As Australia wrestles with how to proceed with this difficult issue, Baird expresses his hopes for a more compassionate Australia.

Hi I recently volunteered to assist with a Refugee Simulation in Country Victoria as a part of Human Rights week. The sinulation was produced for OXFAM and is designed to help the public "walk in a refugees shoes". OXFAM plan to run another much larger one in Camberra in June. It's good to know we have a good man in this position in Australian politics. Thanks Steve
